2020 Artworks
I am a self-taught painter and a Saatchi contributor. My art has been shown, purchased, and published. Prints of some items are available for purchase.
Since 2014, I have been painting (and drawing) consistently, studying realism, painting live and showing my work in Dallas, Texas (Art CV). In 2016, I began working with oil paints and continue to use a variety of materials/styles. Most of my practice has been focused on portraiture and the figure; though my favorite pieces are somewhat surreal with hidden elements and surprises.
Process
Illustrations start with a concept and while I have done many artworks like this; my current paintings usually start with a feeling, basic idea, color or image that feels exciting or inspiring. Next, I paint a gestural abstract ground or I paint what I see from life or photo references. Painting freely without thinking too hard invites a focused meditative state, allowing the work to become what it wants without me getting in the way. The main subject may tell part of the story but is not always what the painting is "about".
I paint large color areas on a primed canvas, adding detail throughout and progressing from largest to smallest blocks of color. I use a variety of techniques such as minimal brush strokes, limited palette, and glazing/layering. I mix every stroke on the palette or directly on the the canvas; using optical color mixing where I can.
Adjustments are made and elements are added as they *appear* to me during the painting process. Visuals relating to world events (In the Pavement) and memories of personal stories (Homeless) often arrive in the paintings without my conscious awareness; I enhance them when I see them. From there, the story of the painting emerges (The Deniers). Some paintings tell a different story when hung or viewed upside down (Snowglobe). Reveals of those stories are digitally animated and made into NFT collections (Corvidae '20).
I also paint public figures (Stevie) and characters who make me smile (Wonka and Pippi). I sometimes paint for close friends/family (For Marissa).

This painting, Corvidae '20 changes color in sunlight. It also hides a story which is revealed in a series of 3 Crypto Art experiences (NFTs); now available on Open Sea.
